Tertulia: The Short Fiction Edition (working title)

Featuring three fabulous fictionistas: Anar Ali, Emily Schultz, and Sarah Selecky!!

Anar Ali's first book Baby Khaki's Wings (Penguin) was a finalist for the Commonwealth Writers' Best First Book Prize (Canada and the Caribbean), the Trillium Book Award, and the Danuta Gleed Literary Prize. Her work has also appeared in The Globe and Mail, The National Post, and The New York Times. She was born in Tanzania, raised in Alberta, and now lives in Toronto where she is working on a novel.

Emily Schultz's first collection of short stories, Black Coffee Night, was shortlisted for the Danuta Gleed Award for Best First Fiction in Canada, and for the ReLit Award. Schultz followed up with a novel, Joyland, and a collection of poetry, Songs for the Dancing Chicken, which was named a finalist for the 2008 Trillium Prize for Poetry. Her newest novel, Heaven Is Small, was released from House of Anansi Press in 2009.

She has held the position of editor at two national magazines, run an experimental art space from her home (with artist/writer Brian Joseph Davis), and currently teaches story writing at George Brown College in Toronto. She also hosts Joyland.ca, an online hub for short fiction featuring writing specific to eight different cities across North America.

Sarah Selecky has been facilitating non-competitive, inspiring workshops for writers since 2001. She has studied writing with Natalie Goldberg and Lynda Barry and earned her MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Her writing has been published in The Sun, Geist Magazine, Prairie Fire, The New Quarterly, Event and The Journey Prize Anthology. Her short story collection, This Cake is for the Party, will be released by Thomas Allen Publishers in May 2010.

Come to Factory Theatre on Sunday, April 25 at 6:00pm to see Daniel MacIvor, Anusree Roy, Bruce Barton, and moderator Aynsley Moorhouse talk about their lives in the theatre out of the spotlight.

THROAT at CrossCurrents

Throat,by Jason Maghanoy, is going to read as part of the 2010 CrossCurrents New Play Festival at the Factory Theatre (125 Bathurst Street, corner of Bathurst and Adelaide) on Sunday, April 25th starting at 2pm (Factory Theatre Studio).




A life-changing storm. A displaced community. Throat follows three friends who start a business cleaning up the government sanctioned trailer park they live in. Their goal: to raise money to buy back their old lives... or live a better one.
