builing Union Station Bursts Open with Artists

Writers, actors and performers fill the vaulted spaces during Doors Open Toronto

Coming home. Crossing streets, borders, oceans. Encountering the city for the first time. Hellos, goodbyes, departures, arrivals…

Journeys – literal and metaphorical – are the focus of Diaspora Dialogues’ two art-packed days at Union Station for the 2009 Doors Open Toronto.

Diaspora Dialogues takes over Union Station to present

literary and dramatic readings, poetry and musical

performances, and delightful theatrical surprises!

Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24 10:30 am – 4:00 pm

Highlights include:

• A reading of The Enormous Radio, a brand-new

short play by award-winning playwright Michael

Healey (The Drawer Boy), commissioned exclusively

for this Diaspora Dialogues event, directed by Ruth

Madoc-Jones (Madness of the Square).

• Poetry and music from Lillian Allen, Red Slam,

teenah edan, and Barbara Hunt.

• Literary readings from Howard Akler (The City Man),

Joe Fiorito (Union Station), Lina Medaglia

(The Demons of Aquilonia), and Michael Ondaatje’s

In the Skin of a Lion, read by award-winning actor

and director David Storch.

• Short "Hello and Goodbye" vignettes throughout

the Great Hall of Union Station, by Toronto theatre

artists including Fides Krucker (Urge Collective),

Convergence Theatre (The Gladstone Variations),

Leah-Simone Bowen (Thy Neighbour's Wife),

and students from the Humber College Theatre

Program directed by Jane Wells (Number Eleven Theatre).

Stick around all day if you want to catch them all!
